Toho sets July record...thanks to "Ponyo"

Toho Co. Ltd., long-time distributor of Studio Ghibli films, experienced its best July ever thanks in part to "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea."

Toho Co. Ltd., the long-time theatrical distributor of Studio Ghibli films in Japan, experienced its best July ever. The company made 12.16 billion yen (or US$111.1 million ) in grosses.

Films cited in the article on Variety Online include the latest Pokémon film-"Pocket Monsters Diamond & Pearl the Movie-Giratina and the Frozen Sky's Bouquet: Shaymin," a romantic drama entitled "Boys Over Flowers" and a comedy entitled "The Magic Hour."

But, of course, the most prominent film mentioned in the story is "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea," which as of August 10th has grossed US$65.9 million .

The previous best July for Toho was in 2001, when "Spirited Away" was originally released. The figures for July 2008 were also 213% higher than July 2007, when "Tales from Earthsea" was in release.
