Don't worry about it. I've been studying Japanese for almost three years now and I still slip up on katakana sometimes. But you're definitely right to try and get that more firmly in your head before diving into kanji.

My Japanese prof literally made us memorize and know all of the katakana in two days. Two days. She gave us at least a week with hiragana, and started throwing kanji in alongside katakana...
