OK, my guess is "Kiki's Delivery Service" where Kiki, while sick in bed, motions to Jiji to eat the leftover bread in the bowl on the table...

I watched the whole movie, but was not able to find who the character is, yet, though...

Which means one of two things... Either I missed the line in the movie OR I have the wrong movie...

OK, belborges must have gotten tied up with RL, so I kept looking and I think that I found the movie and the speaker.

The quote in question was:

"I'd rather you were a good eater than a good essay writer."

The Movie: "Only Yesterday"

What I found were the words:

"The kid who can eat her food is more respected than the one who can write an essay."

The speaker was Taeko's mother, chiding her about the radish slices that she brought home from school wrapped up in a slice of bread (see the clue).

Now, like in other cases, different DVD's may have slightly differently worded 'subtitles'.

I believe that this is the movie and the character...

I can't figure this one out.

Is it from Ocean Waves? From Up On Poppy Hill maybe? I've only seen them once (EDIT: actually twice), so I have forgotten many lines.

You're correct! It's Fireball Oroku from Pom Poko, right after she interrupts the battle between the tanuki at the beginning of the movie.
